The $100 Test

Give each participant $100 (in play money). They distribute it across features, needs, or design priorities. This forces tough trade-offs and reveals what people value. It helps teams align on priorities through transparent decisions. The $100 breakdown: two $20s, three $10s, five $5s, and five $1s.

Participants will:

This exercise can expose hidden tensions. Be prepared to mediate disagreements. A clear prioritization framework will emerge. You'll gain understanding of different perspectives. Document the rationale for future reference. This improves resource allocation skills.

  1. Setup (5 min): Present 8-12 features, needs, or priorities.

  2. Individual Allocation (10 min): Each person privately allocates exactly $100. No item gets more than $25.

  3. Recording (5 min): Record allocations on sticky notes or a digital board.

  4. Results Review (10 min): Display allocations and calculate average scores.

  5. Discussion (15 min): Discuss the highest and lowest scoring items. Explore different rationales.

  6. Consensus Building (10 min): Create a final team allocation that everyone supports.
