Be systematic. Use the same criteria for all solutions. Go beyond features to consider user experience and design. Look for patterns across multiple solutions. These often become conventions. Look for gaps; these are opportunities. Consider including comparisons from other industries as 'wildcards'.

  1. Select Comparisons (15 min): Choose 5-8 comparable solutions. Include direct competitors and solutions in adjacent spaces. Select based on your learning goals.

  2. Define Criteria (15 min): What aspects will you compare? Examples: features, user experience, visual design, pricing, onboarding.

  3. Analyze Each (60 min): Use consistent criteria across all solutions. Take screenshots and notes. Document strengths and weaknesses. Note any surprises.

  4. Synthesize (30 min): Create a comparison matrix. Identify patterns. Note gaps and opportunities. Determine your differentiation.
