Emerging Tech Scenario Design

Your innovation team needs to explore how AI, quantum computing, biotech, and Web3 could reshape your industry. Emerging Tech Scenario Design creates narratives of technology-driven futures. It explores what *could* happen if specific technologies mature and converge, not predicting what *will* happen. This 3-hour exercise transforms abstract tech trends into strategic scenarios, revealing opportunities and threats you should prepare for. This works when your organization faces technology disruption but isn't sure which technologies matter most or how they'll combine. It's powerful for R&D planning or product roadmaps. The shift happens when teams ask 'If this technology works, what becomes possible?'—moving from feasibility debates to strategic exploration. Be aware: this requires participants willing to think speculatively about technology. If your culture demands proof before exploration, start with more concrete exercises. Expect high creative energy during scenario building and intense strategic discussion during implications synthesis. The 3-hour duration enables both breadth and depth. You'll know it's working when teams identify strategic moves they should make today regardless of which technology scenario unfolds.

The goals of this exercise are to:

  • Identify 3-5 emerging technologies with potential impact.

  • Develop 3-4 detailed technology scenarios.

  • Map current strategies against each scenario.

  • Define technology monitoring strategies.

Participants will leave with:

  • Technology-focused future scenarios.

  • Mapped implications of emerging tech.

  • Prepared strategies for technological change.

Before the session, curate high-quality technology sources. Mix mainstream publications with academic research. Avoid hype-driven content. Pre-identify relevant technologies. During facilitation, balance speculation with grounding. Push teams to be imaginative but also think through what must be true for scenarios to unfold. During strategy mapping, don't dismiss uncomfortable scenarios as 'unlikely'—the point is preparing for multiple futures. Warning signs include: all scenarios looking similar, teams arguing about technology feasibility, scenarios that are just 'today but faster', or strategy mapping that doesn't reveal tough choices. Success looks like: distinct scenarios, genuine debate about strategic implications, and identified technology hedges. After the session, document scenarios for stakeholder briefing. Establish a technology monitoring system.

  1. Setup & Technology Selection (25 minutes): Identify 5-7 emerging technologies relevant to your industry. Use frameworks like the Gartner Hype Cycle. Discuss each technology's current state and potential impact. Select 3-4 technologies to focus on.

  2. Technology Deep Dive (30 minutes): Divide into teams. Each researches one technology: current capabilities, barriers to adoption, potential breakthroughs. Teams prepare 5-minute briefings.

  3. Scenario Building (50 minutes): Create 3-4 scenarios based on technology combinations: 'If technologies X and Y mature, what future emerges?' Teams develop rich narratives with specific examples and timeframes.

  4. Scenario Presentations (25 minutes): Each team presents their scenario (5-7 minutes). Capture key distinctions and discuss which scenarios feel most plausible.

  5. Strategy Mapping (40 minutes): Map current initiatives against scenarios using a matrix. Which strategies work across scenarios? Which depend on specific outcomes? Identify technology hedges and monitoring priorities.

  6. Synthesis & Next Steps (10 minutes): Identify 3-5 strategic implications and near-term technology bets or partnerships to pursue.
