Lean UX

Lean UX favors rapid experimentation over documentation. Teams build hypotheses about user behavior, test them fast, and iterate based on feedback. It's an antidote to waterfall design. Embrace uncertainty; decide based on evidence, not opinions.

Participants will:

  • Form testable hypotheses about user behavior.

  • Design minimum viable experiments.

  • Practice rapid prototyping and iteration.

  • Develop comfort with uncertainty.

  • Align teams on evidence-based decisions.

Teams will:

  • Internalize hypothesis-driven design.

  • Reduce wasted effort on unwanted features.

  • Achieve faster iteration via validated learning.

  • Shift toward a culture of experimentation.

Keep energy high; focus on speed and learning. Push back on feature creep; ask: "What's the smallest test?" Time-box ruthlessly. Celebrate failures as learning. It's easy for teams to overbuild. Ensure hypotheses are testable. Don't skip user testing. Schedule regular hypothesis reviews. Create a learning backlog. Share learnings.

  1. Problem Definition (30 minutes): Review business goals and user research. Identify the core problem. Write a user-focused problem statement. Secure team alignment.

  2. Assumptions & Hypotheses (30 minutes): List assumptions about users/solutions. Prioritize by risk. Convert top assumptions to testable hypotheses: "We believe [capability] will result in [outcome]. We know we're right when [signal]."

  3. MVP Definition (45 minutes): Brainstorm the smallest experiment to test your hypothesis. Focus on learning. Define success criteria. Assign ownership; set a time limit.

  4. Rapid Prototyping (45 minutes): Build a low-fidelity prototype for testing. Don't over-polish. Focus on core interaction. Prepare for user testing.

  5. Testing & Learning (30 minutes): Run quick user tests. Document observations. Identify learnings and changes. Decide: pivot, persevere, or kill.

  6. Debrief (15 minutes): Share learnings. Update hypotheses. Plan the next experiment.
