Explore different contexts to spark creative insights. Observe parallel situations to understand unique elements that you can apply to your design challenge.
You'll get:

Analogous inspiration from other domains

Fresh perspectives

Creative inspiration

Be open to unexpected insights. Don't be afraid to explore seemingly unrelated contexts. Getting out of your usual environment can spark creative thinking. I've found that setting a clear intention for the visit beforehand helps avoid feeling lost.

 1. List research targets. On large paper, list distinct activities, behaviors, and emotions to research.

 2. Identify parallel settings. Next to each item, write down parallel settings/situations where you might observe them.

 3. Vote on site visits. Have the team vote on the most promising locations for inspiration.

 4. Conduct focused visits. During the visit, focus on seeking understanding while remaining open to unexpected inspiration.
