The goals are to synthesize research into user representations, identify user segments and create a shared reference for team decision-making. Maintain a user-centered focus throughout design.

Base personas on research, not assumptions. The quality of personas reflects the research quality. Avoid demographic-only personas; focus on behavior. 3-5 personas are usually enough. Each persona should represent different needs. Consider negative personas. Make personas memorable with names and photos. Post personas in the workspace. Update them as you learn more.

  1. Research Review (10 minutes): Gather user research data. Review transcripts, surveys, and analytics. Look for behavioral patterns. Identify variables that differentiate users. Note goals and contexts of use.

  2. Pattern Identification (15 minutes): Group users by behavioral similarities. Identify 3-5 distinct user segments. Look for differences in goals, behaviors, pain points, context, and tech savviness. Avoid demographic stereotypes.

  3. Persona Building (25 minutes): Create a detailed profile for each persona. Include a name, photo, role, key demographics (age, location), goals, behaviors, pain points, tech comfort level, and a quote.

  4. Validation & Refinement (5 minutes): Review personas as a team. Ensure they reflect real research. Check for stereotypes or biases. Confirm personas are distinct. Agree on primary vs. secondary personas.
