Participants will synthesize research into an actionable problem statement, define the problem from a human-centered perspective, and establish a foundation for ideation.

  • A point-of-view statement.

  • Clear problem articulation.

  • A foundation for ideation.

The POV must be based on REAL user research, not assumptions. The insight should reveal something surprising. Good POVs are narrow enough to be actionable but broad enough for creative solutions. Avoid stating solutions; frame the problem, not the answer. Does it help us know what to solve, not how? Create multiple POVs for different user types. Use the POV as input for "How Might We" questions. A POV that's too broad: "Users need better experiences." Too narrow: "Users need a blue button here." Aim for something in between.

  1. Research Review (8 minutes): Review user research findings. Identify key user needs and important insights about user context. Review user quotes and behaviors, noting patterns.

  2. POV Drafting (15 minutes): Use the template: [User] needs [need] because [insight]. Fill in each component:

User: Specific user type (from persona or research).
Need: Core need or goal (verb-based).
Insight: Why this need exists (surprising insight from research).
Examples:
"Busy parents need a fast way to prepare healthy meals because they feel guilty about feeding kids processed food but have no time to cook from scratch."
"Junior developers need confidence in their code reviews because they fear public criticism prevents them from asking important questions."

  1. Refinement (5 minutes): Test the POV against these criteria:

Based on real research (not assumptions)?
Human-centered (focuses on the person, not the product)?
Specific enough to be actionable?

  • Narrow enough to solve meaningfully?

Revise and improve the statement. Get team alignment.

  1. Validation (2 minutes): Ask: "If we solve this, will it matter to users?" Confirm it guides ideation appropriately and doesn't imply a solution. Finalize and document.
