Participants will make the value proposition tangible. They will clarify key product features. Participants will adopt the customer's perspective and create a shared product vision.
Participants leave with a completed product box and a packaging vision. They will have a clear articulation of the product's core essence.
This exercise is effective because it's tangible. It's customer-focused, forcing prioritization. The box front is your elevator pitch: what, who, and why. Emphasize benefits over features (e.g., feature: "Cloud storage"; benefit: "Access files anywhere"). Give examples, but don't over-prescribe. Keep teams small (3-5). Time pressure prevents perfectionism. Variations: magazine cover or trade show booth design. I've used this for product planning, feature prioritization, and marketing. Teams often disagree on key features. Benefits are harder to articulate. Customer perspectives often differ. Success means everyone understands the core value and target customer. The box should entice purchase. Sometimes, teams cling to beloved features, even if unimportant to customers.

  1. Setup (5 min): Explain the product is sold in a store. It needs packaging. What makes a customer choose your box? Show real product box examples.

  2. Box Templates: Provide six-panel templates (front, back, left, right, top, bottom) or actual boxes.

  3. Front Panel (10 min): Include the product name, tagline, key visual, the hook (why buy?), and the most compelling benefit.

  4. Back Panel (10 min): List 3-5 key features with benefits. Include the target audience, the problem solved, and social proof (testimonials, awards, stats).

  5. Side Panels (10 min): Add extra features and technical specs (if relevant). Note what's included and comparisons.

  6. Work Time (20 min): Teams design boxes using drawing, collage, or writing. Focus on clarity and appeal. Think like marketers.

  7. Gallery Walk (5 min): Display boxes for observation. No presentations needed.

  8. Presentations (10 min total): Each team presents their box (2 min each). Explain key decisions and rationale.
