User Story

User stories capture features from the user's point of view. They follow the format: "As a [user type], I want [goal] so that [benefit]." This keeps the focus on user value.

Keep stories independent and negotiable. Focus on the "why," not just the "what." Avoid technical details. Write from one user's perspective. Use the INVEST criteria (Independent, Negotiable, Valuable, Estimable, Small, Testable). Encourage discussion. Sometimes, teams struggle with estimating effort initially; be patient.

  1. Identify the user role.

  2. Define the user's goal.

  3. Explain the user's benefit.

  4. Use the format: "As a [user], I want [goal] so that [benefit]."

  5. Keep stories small and doable in one sprint.

  6. Add acceptance criteria:


  • Given [context]

  • When [action]

  • Then [outcome]


  1. Include relevant details.

  2. Estimate effort.

  3. Prioritize by value and dependencies.

  4. Group stories into epics.

  5. Review with users.

  6. Refine based on feedback.
