UX Maturity Assessment Workshop

Before planning improvements, gauge your organization's UX maturity. This assessment reveals where you stand in user-centered design. Then, it pinpoints realistic next steps. Interventions for high maturity fail at lower levels. Meet the organization where it is.

The goals of this exercise are to:

  • Objectively assess current UX practice.

  • Identify gaps in UX maturity.

  • Create a realistic roadmap for UX capability development.

  • Build shared understanding among stakeholders.

You'll get:

  • An objective assessment of UX maturity.

  • Identified gaps and priorities.

  • A realistic roadmap for capability development.

Teams often overrate themselves. They describe what they wish they did. Ask for evidence. "Show me when this happened." Aspiration isn't reality. Low maturity isn't failure. It's a starting point. Early-stage companies might strategically operate at low UX maturity. This assessment is diagnostic, not judgmental. You can't jump stages. Limited maturity can't leap to Integrated. The next step is Emergent. Incremental progress works best.
Here's how to run the exercise:

  1. Review Maturity Framework (20 minutes). Use a framework like Nielsen Norman's. Review stages: Absent, Limited, Emergent, Structured, Integrated, User-Driven. Understand each stage in practice.

  2. Assess Current State (50 minutes). For each UX activity (research, testing, design), rate current practice. How consistently do we do it? How well-resourced? How integrated? How measured? Document evidence.

  3. Identify Patterns (25 minutes). Look across assessments. Are we consistently at one stage? Mixed? What's strongest/weakest? Organizations are often mature in some areas (visual design) but not others (user research).

  4. Define Target State (25 minutes). Where do we want to be in 12-18 months? What capabilities matter most? "Highest maturity" isn't always right. Pick a realistic target.
