A power map of stakeholders. Understood influence dynamics. Strategic engagement plans.
This tool is critical for equity-centered design. Be honest about power dynamics. Commit to meaningful redistribution. It can be challenging to confront existing power structures, but it's a necessary step.
It's important to understand how power exists amongst project stakeholders. Some power should be held by those closest to the problem. Where it isn't, redistribute it. Power Mapping helps explore these dynamics. It encourages self-reflection and action. Once aware, take initiative to redistribute power.

Steps:

  1. Gather the team and review the Power Mapping worksheet and reflection prompts.

  2. Review the project brief and identify key stakeholders and their roles.

  3. Review the 'power tokens.' Consider which kinds of power are relevant or necessary. Add them to your team list.

  4. Map the power tokens to stakeholders. Note who holds which kinds of power, and how much. Reflect on why.

  5. Continue mapping and reflecting.
