Problem Prioritization Matrix

Teams face many problems with limited resources. The Problem Prioritization Matrix helps evaluate problems using clear criteria. This helps focus on the most important issues first. In 60 minutes, you'll avoid wasting time on easy problems while critical ones are ignored.

Define what makes a problem a priority (impact, frequency, feasibility). Score each problem against these criteria. Create a prioritized list. Align the team on which problems to tackle first.

  • Prioritized list of problems using a matrix approach.

  • Clear problem rankings based on agreed-upon criteria.

  • Focused team effort on the highest-priority problems.

It's tempting for teams to rate everything as high priority. Push them to differentiate. Establishing clear criteria is key. If the criteria are poorly defined, the results won't be useful.

  1. Define Criteria (10 min): Discuss and agree on the criteria for prioritization. What factors are most important?

  2. List Problems (10 min): Document all the problems the team is facing. Be as comprehensive as possible.

  3. Score Problems (25 min): Rate each problem against each criterion. Use a consistent scoring system.

  4. Plot Matrix (10 min): Visualize the priorities on a matrix. This makes it easy to see which problems score highest.

  5. Select Problems (5 min): Choose the top problems to solve based on the matrix.
