Cast a wide net, then prioritize. Consider supporters and detractors. Map formal and informal power. Update the map regularly. Be sensitive to politics. Include often-forgotten stakeholders, like maintenance. Consider indirect stakeholders. Use for communication planning.

  1. Brainstorm all possible stakeholders. 2. Group stakeholders:


  • Internal vs. External

  • Primary vs. Secondary

  • Direct vs. Indirect. 3. Create a visual map showing:

  • Stakeholder positions

  • Relationships

  • Influence levels (circle size)

  • Interest levels (proximity to center). 4. Add details:

  • Needs and goals

  • Concerns

  • Influence on success

  • Communication preferences. 5. Identify key relationships. 6. Map information flow and decisions. 7. Highlight conflicts or synergies. 8. Prioritize engagement.
