LUMA - Think-Aloud Testing

Want to quickly uncover usability issues? Ask users to think out loud as they use your product. They'll narrate their thoughts, revealing confusion, delight, and everything in between. It's a direct path to finding problems.

Participants will:

  • Hear user's unedited thoughts.

  • Identify key usability issues.

  • Understand user mental models.

  • Pinpoint areas of confusion.

  • Gather immediate, actionable feedback.

  • Improve designs based on real user input.

You'll gain:

  • Think-aloud testing skills.

  • Usability insights.

  • A list of cognitive barriers users face.

It's tough, but maintain a neutral demeanor. Avoid leading questions. If participants go silent, gently encourage them to keep talking. Don't just note the issues; capture the context around them. Sometimes, the 'why' is more important than the 'what'.

  1. Prepare realistic test tasks.

  2. Set up your recording equipment (audio and/or video).

  3. Welcome the participant and make them comfortable.

  4. Explain the think-aloud protocol clearly. Emphasize that there are no wrong answers - you are testing the product, not them.

  5. Start with an easy task to get them talking.

  6. Gently remind them to keep verbalizing their thoughts throughout.

  7. Avoid helping or hinting, even if they struggle. Silence can be golden; let them work through it.

  8. Take detailed notes of their actions and comments.

  9. Thank the participant for their time and valuable feedback.
