Usability Test Scenario Development

Usability test scenarios are the scripts that guide participants. Good scenarios feel natural and surface real problems. Bad ones lead users and bias results. This exercise teaches you to write scenarios that generate valid, actionable insights.

Participants will:

  • Connect research objectives to testable scenarios.

  • Write neutral, non-leading task scenarios.

  • Create realistic contexts that motivate natural behavior.

  • Define clear, observable success criteria.

  • Practice pilot testing and refinement.

Participants will produce:

  • Well-designed test scenarios that reveal real usability issues.

  • Non-leading tasks that generate valid insights.

  • Clear success criteria for analysis.

  • A ready-to-run usability test protocol.

Use realistic contexts, not "imagine you are...". Avoid task instructions that reveal the answer. Include motivation (why the user cares). Write at an appropriate reading level. Watch out for leading language (e.g., "Click the blue button"), unrealistic scenarios, too many tasks per session, and missing baseline/comparative scenarios.

  1. Review research objectives and questions.

  2. Identify what decisions the research will inform.

  3. Prioritize questions by importance.

  4. Map questions to testable scenarios.

  5. List core user tasks to evaluate.

  6. Identify critical paths and common flows.

  7. Include both happy paths and error scenarios.

  8. Prioritize by frequency and importance.

  9. Write scenario context (situation, motivation, goal).

  10. Craft task descriptions without solution hints.

  11. Create realistic, relatable situations.

  12. Write neutral language that doesn't lead.

  13. Define what successful completion looks like.

  14. Identify observable behaviors to track.

  15. Create severity ratings for different failures.

  16. Plan how to measure time and satisfaction.

  17. Run scenarios with a colleague.

  18. Identify confusing or leading language.

  19. Refine based on pilot feedback.

  20. Finalize test protocol.
