Creative Matrix
Constraints can spark creativity. A creative matrix gives you structure by combining different categories to generate ideas. This forces unusual combinations that lead to fresh thinking. Use this method when you need lots of ideas fast.
- Generate many ideas.
- Think differently.
- Find unusual combinations.
- Get everyone contributing.
- Break out of ruts.
- Explore systematically.
- Matrix-generated creative combinations.
- Novel ideas from systematic combination.
- An expanded solution space.
- Rows are concepts or solution spaces. Columns are attributes or parameters.
- Don't over-complicate it—a 4x4 matrix with good prompts beats a 10x10 matrix that overwhelms.
Generating ideas:
- Work cell by cell. Each intersection forces unexpected combinations.
- The weird ones—'What if our banking app used game mechanics?'—often lead to the best ideas.
Managing energy:
- Energy drops around the third row. That's when teams default to obvious answers. Push through. The best ideas often come from fatigue-induced lateral thinking.
Harvest the matrix:
- Star the promising intersections.
- Don't try to develop them all. Pick 3-5 that generate the most energy and explore those further. Sometimes, teams get stuck in analysis paralysis; encourage them to just pick a direction.
