Outcomes

The team will build a shared library of design principles with examples. Team members will enhance their design vocabulary. Expect increased awareness of design patterns in digital experiences, which creates a foundation for future design discussions. Sometimes, the examples spark debate, which can be a good thing!

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Each participant selects a design principle (e.g., consistency, hierarchy, accessibility, feedback, simplicity). Find 2-3 real-world examples.

  2. Present the principle with examples. Explain why these examples work and how the principle improves user experience (5 minutes per person).

  3. Team asks clarifying questions or shares examples (2 minutes per person).

  4. Create a shared list of all principles covered (5 minutes).

Facilitator Tips

Encourage participants to choose diverse and compelling examples. Be prepared to guide the discussion if it stalls. Remember that the goal is shared understanding, not design critique.

Variations

For a digital version, share screenshots or photos. For a physical version, use objects in the room or personal items. To focus on bad design, highlight examples that violate principles. Try a themed version focusing on specific principles.
