Data Collaboratives Canvas

Designs a data-sharing partnership between organisations before anyone signs anything.

What it is

A planning canvas for the awkward middle of a data partnership: who holds the data, who needs it, what public value the exchange creates, what each side gets back, and what governance and risk sit around it. It exists because these arrangements usually fail on incentives and trust rather than on technology.

Reach for it when

• Two organisations want to share data and have not agreed why
• A public-interest project depends on data a private company holds
• A data partnership has stalled and nobody can name the blocker

Running it

1. Get both sides in the room. Filled in by one party alone it is a wish list.
2. Name the public value first, in a sentence both organisations would sign.
3. Work through what each side gives and gets. An exchange with a one-sided benefit column will not survive contact with legal.
4. Finish on governance and risk, and write the specific next commitment with an owner and a date.
