Team 2020
Team Alignment Map
Four columns that stop a project meeting from ending in nods: joint objectives, commitments, resources, risks.
What it is
A planning surface a team fills together in one pass: what we're doing (joint objectives), who does what (joint commitments), what we need (joint resources), and what could hurt us (joint risks). Then a backward pass turns every gap into a fix before anyone leaves the room.
Reach for it when
- Kickoffs that end with everyone agreeing and nobody committed
- Cross-functional work where the missing-resource conversation happens three weeks too late
- Weekly planning for a team that keeps rediscovering the same risks
Running it
- Forward pass: fill the four columns left to right, whole team, 30 minutes.
- Backward pass: read right to left and fix what the room just admitted: unstaffed commitments, unfunded resources, unowned risks.
- Names go on commitments. "Team" is not an owner.
- Photograph it; rerun the backward pass at the next check-in.
Watch out: Skipping the backward pass turns it into a nicely formatted to-do list. The second pass is the tool.

This workshop was incredibly effective for our remote team! We adapted it slightly for a virtual setting and it worked wonderfully. The key was breaking into smaller breakout rooms.
Great resource! One tip: prepare all materials the day before to avoid any last-minute rushes.
Used this for our quarterly planning session. The structured approach really helped us stay on track!
