01 Title
On screen "Start Here" · How this training works · Facilitation Foundations
My daughter had piano lessons for two years, Tuesdays at half four. What she wanted was to play one particular song. Her teacher never let her near it.
What she got instead was four bars. Right hand only, at a tempo that sounded nothing like the song, twenty minutes a day, until those four bars were boring.
Then the left hand. Then the next four bars.
About a year in she sat down at a friend's house and played the whole thing, and everyone in the kitchen assumed she'd learned the song. She hadn't. She'd learned eleven small things that added up to it.
Hold onto those four bars. That's how this path is built.
02 What this path is
On screen 8 modules · ~20 min each · ~2.5 hrs video · ~4.5 hrs total
So here's what you've got. Eight modules, about twenty minutes of video each. That's roughly two and a half hours if you watched them back to back, which I'd rather you didn't. With the practice and the checks, about four and a half hours in total, and most people spread that over a few weeks.
03 Two acts, and the hinge
On screen Modules 1-4 the desk · Modules 5-8 the room · hinge at 4
It comes in two halves.
Modules 1 to 4 are everything you control from a desk before anyone walks in. What facilitation really is, setting the objective, the anatomy of a workshop, designing the agenda.
Modules 5 to 8 are the room itself. Opening strong and giving instructions, creating participation, managing time and energy, then reading the room and closing well.
Module 4 is the hinge. That's where the subject stops being paper and starts being people.
04 How a module works
On screen Video · one practice (~10 min) · one check
Every module has the same shape. A video, one short practice, and a check.
The practice takes about ten minutes and runs on material we give you, so you don't need a workshop of your own in the diary to do it. If you have got one coming up, every practice works on that instead, and I'd take that option.
And the modules don't chain. Nothing you make in one is needed by the next. Take them a week apart, or jump to Module 6 because participation is your problem this week, and nothing breaks.
0:38 · then: 8-10 questions · unlimited retries · nothing gated
The check is eight to ten questions. Unlimited retries. Get one wrong and you get a written explanation rather than a score, because what these are catching is the judgements that are easy to nod along to and genuinely hard to make on a Tuesday afternoon.
It's a formative check, not a credential. Nothing is gated, so the next module opens whether you pass or not.
No quiz for this part, by the way. This one's orientation.
05 What's deliberately not here
On screen No closing module · dynamics live in Bootcamp · stakeholders are path 4.2
Three things aren't in here, and I'd rather say so now than have you find out in Module 6.
There's no dedicated closing module. Closing is taught as a block in Module 3, timed in Module 4, delivered in Module 8. That's enough at this depth and not enough past it.
Group dynamics and difficult participants get touched in Modules 6 and 8, but the Facilitator Bootcamp gives them a full 150 minutes, which is where they belong.
And there's nothing on senior stakeholders. That's a different path, 4.2.
0:35 · then: A notebook. That's it.
What you need before you start. Nothing. No workshop booked, no team, no tool open. A notebook is plenty.
If there is a session in your diary, keep it in the back of your mind, because every practice will work on it.
06 Callback and what's next
On screen Next: Module 1, What Facilitation Really Is
Four bars, right hand, Tuesdays at half four. Nobody hands you the whole song, and if they did you'd drop it.
So start with the first four bars. Module 1, What Facilitation Really Is: the role, the mindset, and when it's actually worth running a workshop at all.
## Callback
The four bars from Beat 1 land at the close: the whole song was eleven small things that added up. There is no practice exercise on this part and the script says so out loud. The practice starts in Module 1.
