Strategy
Business Landscape Canvas
A six-round workshop building a shared current-state and future-state view, plus the forces around change.
What it is
Six sequential brainstorm rounds — goals, what's working, what's broken, future state, driving forces, and barrier forces — synthesized into two views: a Current State (working/broken/forces) and a Future State (vision/goals). A fuller picture than a goals list or journey map alone.
Reach for it when
- A team that has a goals list but no shared read on what's actually broken today
- A change initiative that hasn't named what will resist it
- A strategy session that needs more than a wish list of where the org wants to go
Running it
- Run a compressed Goal Mapping pass first (rounds 1-2) to surface and prioritize goals.
- Brainstorm what's working, then what's broken, in the current state (rounds 3-4).
- Brainstorm the future-state vision and what success looks like (round 5), then the driving and barrier forces around the change (round 6).
- Synthesize into two views — Current State and Future State — with a group of up to 12 over roughly 2.5 hours, with breaks.
Watch out: Skip the forces rounds and the session produces a wish list that ignores what will resist the change — and running all six rounds back-to-back over 2.5 hours without a break exhausts the room before you get there.

This workshop was incredibly effective for our remote team! We adapted it slightly for a virtual setting and it worked wonderfully. The key was breaking into smaller breakout rooms.
Great resource! One tip: prepare all materials the day before to avoid any last-minute rushes.
Used this for our quarterly planning session. The structured approach really helped us stay on track!
