Strategy
Context Canvas (DABB variant)
Eight zones mapping the outside forces acting on a company, built to be revisited, not filed.
What it is
'Your Company' sits at the centre; six sectors radiate around it — Demographic Trends, Rules & Regulations, Economy & Environment, Competition, Technology Trends and Customer Needs — plus a seventh Uncertainties zone for high-impact signals too unclear to categorise. It's framed explicitly as a repeat scan, meant to be revisited as trends evolve rather than filled in once.
Reach for it when
- A strategy team that only ever discusses competitors it already knows by name
- A leadership group blindsided by a regulatory or technology shift it had no zone to place
- A business that scanned its environment once, years ago, and never reopened the file
Running it
- Place 'Your Company' at the centre as the frame of reference for everything else.
- Work sector by sector — Demographic, Rules & Regulations, Economy & Environment, Competition, Technology, Customer Needs — capturing trends one per sticky note.
- Route anything high-impact but too unclear to categorise into the Uncertainties zone rather than forcing it into a sector.
- Put a repeat session on the calendar now; this 30 to 60 minute scan is meant to be redone, not archived.
Watch out: Treated as a one-off exercise instead of a recurring scan, and trends get confused with facts that are already true rather than forward-looking signals.

This workshop was incredibly effective for our remote team! We adapted it slightly for a virtual setting and it worked wonderfully. The key was breaking into smaller breakout rooms.
Great resource! One tip: prepare all materials the day before to avoid any last-minute rushes.
Used this for our quarterly planning session. The structured approach really helped us stay on track!
