The Core Model Canvas
Plans a single page around the user task and the business goal that meet on it, then works outward to the paths in and forward.
What it is
One canvas per core page. It holds the business goals the page serves, the user tasks that bring someone to it, the inward paths that get them there, the core content itself, and the forward paths you want them to take next. It is content strategy done as a workshop artefact rather than a sitemap.
Reach for it when
- A website redesign is being argued as navigation instead of content
- Stakeholders each want their section on the homepage
- A page gets traffic and nobody can say what it is for
Running it
- Pick one core page. The method falls apart applied to a whole site at once.
- Fill business goals and user tasks first, side by side. A page that serves no user task or no business goal has just failed its review.
- Work outward: inward paths, then the core content, then forward paths.
- Run it with a stakeholder and a writer in the room together. The value is the argument the canvas forces, not the filled sheet.
Watch out: Used on twenty pages it becomes documentation nobody reads. It earns its keep on the handful of pages the business actually depends on.

This workshop was incredibly effective for our remote team! We adapted it slightly for a virtual setting and it worked wonderfully. The key was breaking into smaller breakout rooms.
Great resource! One tip: prepare all materials the day before to avoid any last-minute rushes.
Used this for our quarterly planning session. The structured approach really helped us stay on track!
