Customer
Customer Transformation Canvas
A before/after canvas — current state, transformation, future state — for a value proposition grounded in real change.
What it is
Left column is the customer's Current State (identity, goals, problems); right column is the Future State (the improved condition and benefits, in the customer's own terms); the Transformation — the 'phone booth' — is the mechanism connecting them, drawn as a connector in the middle. A Value Proposition strip beneath both distills the three into one benefit-led statement.
Reach for it when
- A pitch describes the product's features fluently but can't say what actually changes for the customer.
- A team senses a strategic gap in the positioning but can't name where it's coming from.
- A value proposition statement reads like a tagline with no benefit content behind it.
Running it
- Describe the target audience's Current State as a group.
- Independently brainstorm the Future State, then converge as a team.
- Discuss and name the Transformation mechanism connecting the two states.
- Draft several candidate Value Proposition statements, vote on the strongest, and stress-test it against real customer language.
Watch out: Future State gets written in terms of the product's features instead of the customer's improved condition — or the team skips Current State entirely and jumps straight to the pitch.

This workshop was incredibly effective for our remote team! We adapted it slightly for a virtual setting and it worked wonderfully. The key was breaking into smaller breakout rooms.
Great resource! One tip: prepare all materials the day before to avoid any last-minute rushes.
Used this for our quarterly planning session. The structured approach really helped us stay on track!
