Game Design Canvas
A seven-cell canvas that breaks a game down to player, core loop, mechanics, and the feeling it leaves.
What it is
Seven cells: player and motivation, the core action-feedback-reward loop, mechanics, the dynamics that emerge from them, the aesthetics or feeling aimed for, win/lose and progression, and business model or delivery. Built to pressure-test a game concept before any art or code gets built.
Reach for it when
- A game concept being pitched for internal greenlight with no defined core loop
- A gamified-learning product where the game keeps drifting away from the actual learning objective
- A team confusing the rules they wrote with the behavior those rules will actually produce
Running it
- Define Player and their motivation first — competition, mastery, social, or story — since everything else follows from it.
- Draft the Core Loop in one sentence (action, feedback, reward) before detailing Mechanics.
- Play-test the loop verbally as a group: walk through three turns out loud.
- Fill Dynamics by predicting what happens when multiple players interact with the mechanics, then check Aesthetics against what the loop actually produces.
Watch out: Mechanics get designed before anyone defines the player and their motivation, and Mechanics gets confused with Dynamics — the rules you wrote versus the behavior those rules actually produce.

This workshop was incredibly effective for our remote team! We adapted it slightly for a virtual setting and it worked wonderfully. The key was breaking into smaller breakout rooms.
Great resource! One tip: prepare all materials the day before to avoid any last-minute rushes.
Used this for our quarterly planning session. The structured approach really helped us stay on track!
