Heuristic Evaluation Board
Three to five evaluators independently score a product against Nielsen's 10 usability heuristics, then merge findings.
What it is
A heuristics checklist as the fixed reference column, the screens or flows in scope, each evaluator's independent findings, a merged and deduped list, severity ratings on Nielsen's 0-4 scale, and recommendations for the top issues. An expert-review method, not a substitute for testing with real users.
Reach for it when
- A redesign that needs usability findings before there's budget or time for user testing
- A shipped product due for a lightweight periodic health-check
- A larger usability study that needs triage on where to focus first
Running it
- Scope the screens or flows tightly and share Nielsen's 10-heuristics reference sheet before the session — a full-product review in one sitting rarely works.
- Have each of 3-5 evaluators go through the flow independently for 30-60 minutes, logging violations by heuristic with a 0-4 severity score.
- Reconvene to merge findings and discuss any severity disagreements — issues multiple evaluators caught independently are usually the highest-confidence ones.
- Rank the merged list by severity and effort, and assign an owner to each top finding.
Watch out: Evaluators compare notes before finishing their independent pass, which collapses the diversity of perspective the method depends on — Nielsen's own research found about 5 evaluators catch 75% of problems this way, but only if they don't influence each other first.

This workshop was incredibly effective for our remote team! We adapted it slightly for a virtual setting and it worked wonderfully. The key was breaking into smaller breakout rooms.
Great resource! One tip: prepare all materials the day before to avoid any last-minute rushes.
Used this for our quarterly planning session. The structured approach really helped us stay on track!
