Mission Model Canvas
The Business Model Canvas for organizations that don't sell anything: mission achievement instead of revenue.
What it is
Blank and Osterwalder rebuilt the nine boxes for mission-driven and public-sector work: beneficiaries instead of customer segments, mission budget instead of revenue streams, deployment instead of channels, and mission achievement as the bottom line. Same discipline, different scoreboard.
Reach for it when
- A nonprofit or public team tries the Business Model Canvas and the revenue box breaks the conversation
- A grant-funded program needs its theory of delivery on one page
- An internal platform team has stakeholders instead of customers
Running it
- Fill beneficiaries and value propositions first: who is served, and what changes for them.
- Work the delivery side: deployment, buy-in and support, mission budget.
- Define mission achievement in numbers the team can actually count. This box does the most work.
- 60 minutes for a first pass; revisit after the first real deployment.
Watch out: "Mission achievement" attracts vague words. If the box doesn't say what you'd count, it isn't finished.

This workshop was incredibly effective for our remote team! We adapted it slightly for a virtual setting and it worked wonderfully. The key was breaking into smaller breakout rooms.
Great resource! One tip: prepare all materials the day before to avoid any last-minute rushes.
Used this for our quarterly planning session. The structured approach really helped us stay on track!
