Social Business Model Canvas

The business model canvas rebuilt for social enterprises: impact measures and surplus sit beside revenue.

What it is

Tandemic's Social Innovation Lab adapted the familiar layout for organizations chasing impact and sustainability at once: segments split into beneficiaries and customers, social value proposition beside the commercial one, impact measures next to revenue, and a surplus box asking where profits go.

Reach for it when

  • A social enterprise pitches funders with a charity deck and a business deck that disagree
  • An impact program needs its money story and mission story on the same page
  • A grant application asks "how is this sustainable" and the room goes quiet

Running it

  1. Fill beneficiaries and customers separately, even when they overlap. The distinction drives the whole model.
  2. Write the social value proposition and the customer value proposition side by side.
  3. Put numbers in impact measures the way you would in revenue. Same rigor, same box size.
  4. 60 to 90 minutes with founders plus one person who manages the money.

Watch out: The surplus box gets skipped because it feels premature. Fill it anyway; funders read it first.
